ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is inspired by the question: how can one experience dance? Mixing movement with media, I create in ways that blur the lines between dance, film, and photography, developing a kinesthetic connection between these three forms. Whether through live performance, recorded video, or still image, my work captures the intentions of the present, visceral body.
In creating dance, I value input, collaboration, and personal connection. My movement style places an emphasis on internal thought over external presentation through focus, gesture, and stillness. Combining this internally-generated movement with guided improvisation scores, I encourage performers to find their own artistic voice within my work — something that I was given the opportunity to explore as a growing artist, and aspire to pass along.
Taking my movement intentions into the mediums of film and photography, I explore ways to broaden the experience of dance. My films provide an alternate perspective on movement through the use of framing, camera movement, and editing. I create a curated view of movement, compiling moments that together create a feeling or narrative for audiences to connect to. My photographs capture dance in the unpolished way that movers experience it. Utilizing techniques such as long-exposure, shutter-drag, and the experimental quality of analog photography, I construct a motionless visual that feels active.
I believe work that is collaborative and personal provides an understanding of dance as the deeply-rooted movement that is ingrained in being human. I create so both movers and audiences can appreciate and connect to what they are experiencing through dance, whether it be on stage, screen, or print.
